With all the concern around brown rice syrup last week, I thought it best to go right to the source, Susan Morano at Suzanne's Specialties and ask her directly. Susan has released the following statement and to it, I would like to add some thoughts.
First, the arsenic in brown rice syrup is not the same as the isolated arsenic Lucretia Borgia kept in her ring to poison people. It's a naturally-occurring compound in many cereal grains because it occurs in soil. When found in concert with all the other naturally-occurring compounds in foods, it is very unlikely that the arsenic found would pose any threat to human life. Infants and small children are tender and we must take care with all their foods and other materials that come into contact with them.Next, I find it just a little suspicious that this 'finding' comes now, just as the brown rice syrup industry is poised to gain ground and replace high fructose corn syrup in many foods. As more and more people discover that high fructose corn syrup is not the same in the body as other sweeteners (no matter what their marketing tells you), they are looking for healthier alternatives to it.
I'm not saying it's fishy; I'm just sayin.'
In the end, you must decide for yourself what is best. For me, unless I see proof that is more conclusive than I am seeing now, I stand by brown rice syrup as my choice for sweetening.
Here is Susan's letter...
